We prefer to receive camera-ready ads electronically. If a more traditional workflow suits you better, we still remember how to handle physical formats. (Though if hand set type is your preference, perhaps you would consider meeting us halfway.)

Ad mechanicals

When setting ads, subtract .056" (p4) from the ad's depth to allow for gutter space between ads. Do not subtract .056" from ads that are the full-page 15 inch depth. Ads over 13 inches will be set and billed at the full-page 15 inch depth.

Process color ad procedure

It all starts with a CMYK file. Our printer takes it directly to the plate electronically. So we don't have a proof for you to check. We'll try to catch any glaring errors on your file, but to make sure the color's what you want, you should probably print it out on a color printer and take a look before you send us the file. Newsprint color varies but not much. You'll like the process. Saves time. Looks great. 'Nuff said.

How to provide us with an electronic file

Avenues and the Villager are published electronically on Macintosh computers. Our production artists import your electronic file directly into the newspaper. When building your file, please consider the following list of programs, fonts and formats on the Macintosh platform as providing for the "best import."

Adobe Photoshop
INDD, TIFF, EPS or PDF

Files from other software applications or computer platforms that create a high resolution TIFF, EPS or PDF file with embedded fonts and graphics also work.

Points to remember

• All necessary font and graphic files relating to the ad must be included with your file. Please do not combine font suitcases, but rather include them as provided by the foundry.
• Image resolution should be near 300 dots per inch (dpi). Many programs export 72 dpi files, which is not enough for print media. Digitally taken photographs should also be near 300 dpi.
• PDF files. Please embed complete fonts (not subsets) and graphics. Please do not enable any password protection or security block when creating a pdf.
• Color: Convert all RGB color to CMYK or PMS spot, PMS spot preferred. Grayscale should be black (K) only. (Of course, CMYK photos are CMYK.)
• Illustrator files must include fonts unless font outlines have been created.
• Photoshop type created in grayscale will output inferior to type created in bitmap, especially at smaller sizes.
• It is not necessary to include crop marks.
• We cannot open MS Publisher files.
